Different Types of Headaches

This is probably the toughest problem in one’s life to stand a headache which keeps bothering you badly when you are working or busy doing something important. But all the headaches are not caused by the same reason. There can be different reasons of headaches. Some of them are caused because of tension and some because of migraine. In fact this is very frustrating when you have to stop working because of the headache. Here are some categories of headaches which have different reasons and

Headache created due to tension or “Tension type headache”

The headache which often takes place due to tension is called the tension type headache. This is a very commonest category of headache and most of you must have suffered from this at least once in your life. The other names of this headache are idiopathic headache, psychomyogenic headache, contraction headache.

According to the international headache society this headache can last from few minutes to few days. The patients get infrequent episodes of this headache. The pain felt in this tension type headache is bilaterally felt and this tightens that forehead. But the good part is that this headache will not disable you from doing your regular work.

It will not even get worse with the physical activity that you do. Though the chances of the patient feeling nausea due to this headache are very less but they can become sensitive towards light or sounds. But if the tension type headache is occurring regularly then it might hamper your activities and is considered as a serious situation.

Migraine headache

Though this is slightly less common than the tension type of headache but it affects about 6% of the men and around 18% of women at some point of time in their life. But the females are the general sufferers of this headache. This type of headache can last from 4 hours to 72 hours. This is a pulsating pain that is felt unilaterally.

Sometimes the intensity of the pain is too much that it becomes absolutely unbearable. The patient can feel nausea and this pain can increase due to regular activities. The people having migraine headache have a tendency to vomit and get affected by photophobia.

Cluster headache

This type of headache affect only one percent of the total population suffering from headache and the nature is far different from the tension type or migraine headache. Generally men whose age is between 20 years to 40 years suffer from this type of headache. The pain can last from 15 minutes to 3 hours. The pain is felt on both sides of the eye or around the eyes. The pain can be so excruciating that the patients feel agitated and irate.
